POLYSOMNOGRAPHY 6
This certificate program covers current theory, procedures, and protocols in sleep study polygraphs and prepares students to operate a variety of sophisticated electronic monitoring devices that record brain activity (EEG), muscle and eye movement, respiration, blood oxygen, and other physiological events.
Students learn how to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of sleep and daytime alertness, such as, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and insomnias. The curriculum includes lecture, discussion, computerized learning, simulated exercises, and hands-on clinical experience. The non-practicum courses, which are a combination of theory and practical application in a simulated setting, allow students to apply knowledge and gain experience with patient interaction and sleep study protocols prior to starting the clinical component. The practicum course entails clinical experience in sleep studies conducted in various sites in the Eastern Ontario Region.
Graduates may find employment as polysomnographers in sleep disorder centres within hospitals, private clinics, and research. After successfully completing the program of study, including the requisite clinical experience, graduates are eligible to write the American Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists certification examinations.
